Highland Ladies U18's v Orkney Ladies U18's

Under 18's Ladies - 19/5/24

On Sunday 19th May, Orkney Under 18’s travelled down to Inverness for a match against Highland Ladies U18. Four players from the Youth Academy came in for their debut – Mia Temple, Ashley Hallam, Olivia Lambrakis, and Aimee Bartosik. Aimee took up position as goalie for Highland having recently had some training from our one and only Kev The Goalie!
Highland came out strongly, putting pressure on the Orkney defence in the first quarter. Orkney demonstrated some great defending and superb saves by their goalkeeper who we understand to be only 12! With persistence, Kara Deakin slotted home a goal in the first quarter for Highland.
In Quarter 2, Orkney came out stronger and played some lovely, linked up play before skilfully negotiating their way through on goal to score. Undeterred, Highland connected some lovely passing with runs down the wings by Islay Rutter, Caitlin Blyth and Grace MacKay, with Mara Duffy (Captain) and Lauren Smith holding the midfield. With continued persistence, Highland were rewarded through Lauren Smith’s skills (she pulls defenders all over the place and then cuts in – wonderful to watch!) to score a second field goal.
Orkney continued to try and press with Tayler Barlow and the defence working well together to ensure no access to the D. Highland was then awarded a short corner from which Lauren Smith got Highland’s third goal.
Half time talks included tilt tactics, high press and a collective determination to continue how we started.
Orkney again started the second half looking to break down the defence with composed play from Morgen Donn, Emily Laws, with Olivia Lambrakis having some amazing interceptions and link up play with the midfield. Tayler Barlow played some amazing balls into the Orkney ‘D’ with some nice hold up play but the Orkney defence continued to make it hard on our forwards to get a chance to shoot. With some good pressing from Abbie MacRae, Highland continued the pressure and after some more good runs down the wing, Islay Rutter converted Highland’s fourth goal.
In the final quarter of the game, Orkney continued to press but with determination our debut players Ashley Hallam and Mia Temple made some important tackles to prevent Orkney squeezing through. After another wave of Highland pressure, Mara Duffy secured a fifth goal with a sublime reverse strike into the goal. Orkney however, continued to persist with determination to score before the fulltime whistle.
Final Score – Highland 5 – Orkney 2
A massive thanks to Orkney U18’s, and their coaches for coming down to play us, it was a super opportunity to test out all the hard work and training done this season. Thanks also to our two umpires, Chris Deakin and Stuart Fisk, and Jean Deakin for supporting with the bench and tactics.
It is lovely to see so much talent coming through in hockey and we look forward to our next match, possibly in August.
